Why Liver Fluke Is a Serious Problem
Liver fluke (Fasciola hepatica) is one of the most economically damaging parasites in UK livestock farming. It costs the industry an estimated £300 million per year through condemned livers at slaughter, reduced milk production, poor body condition, and mortality in severe cases. It affects cattle and sheep across the UK, with the highest risk in wetter western and upland regions — though after a wet summer, fluke risk extends across most of England and Wales.
The Liver Fluke Lifecycle
Understanding the lifecycle is key to timing treatment correctly.
- Adult fluke in the bile ducts of infected animals shed eggs into faeces
- Eggs hatch in warm, wet conditions and release miracidia, which infect the mud snail Galba truncatula
- Inside the snail, the parasite develops and multiplies, eventually releasing cercariae
- Cercariae encyst on vegetation as metacercariae — the infective stage for livestock
- Livestock ingest metacercariae while grazing. Immature fluke migrate through the liver tissue before maturing in the bile ducts over 10–12 weeks
The mud snail thrives in wet, poached ground, field margins, and around water sources. Wet summers dramatically increase snail populations and therefore fluke risk the following autumn and winter.
Assessing Fluke Risk on Your Farm
- NADIS Fluke Forecast: The National Animal Disease Information Service publishes a seasonal fluke risk forecast by region — check this each autumn as a starting point
- Farm history: If you've had fluke problems before, assume risk is present until proven otherwise
- Habitat: Walk your fields and identify wet, rushy, or poached areas — these are snail habitats. Fencing off these areas reduces exposure significantly.
- Coproantigen ELISA test: A dung sample test that detects fluke antigen — useful for confirming active infection in cattle. More sensitive than faecal egg counts for fluke.
- Blood testing: Liver enzyme tests (GGT, GLDH) can indicate liver damage from fluke migration in cattle
- Post-mortem / abattoir feedback: Condemned livers at slaughter are a reliable indicator of fluke burden in your herd or flock
Flukicide Products & What They Treat
Not all flukicides kill fluke at all life stages. This is the most important thing to understand when choosing a product.

Key point: Triclabendazole is the only product effective against early immature fluke — making it the product of choice for acute fluke outbreaks in sheep and for autumn treatment when immature fluke are the primary concern.
Treatment Timing by Season
Autumn (October–November)
The highest-risk treatment window. Livestock have been exposed to metacercariae all summer and immature fluke are migrating through the liver. Use triclabendazole to catch early immature stages. This is particularly critical for sheep, where acute fluke can cause sudden death.
Winter (December–January)
Fluke are now maturing. A broader range of products is effective. If triclabendazole resistance is a concern on your farm, this is a good time to use an alternative active (closantel, nitroxynil, or oxyclozanide) to treat adult and late immature fluke.
Spring (February–March)
Treat to remove adult fluke before turnout, reducing pasture contamination for the coming season. An adult-active product is appropriate at this stage.
Summer
Routine summer treatment is not usually necessary unless animals show clinical signs or there is a confirmed high burden.
Triclabendazole Resistance
Resistance to triclabendazole has been confirmed on farms across the UK, particularly in sheep flocks with a history of frequent use. Signs of resistance include:
- Persistent high fluke burdens despite treatment
- Continued clinical signs after triclabendazole treatment
- High condemned liver rates at slaughter despite a treatment programme
If you suspect resistance, discuss a faecal egg count reduction test or coproantigen testing with your vet. Rotating to alternative actives and reducing treatment frequency where possible helps slow resistance development.
Acute Fluke in Sheep: A Welfare Emergency
Acute fluke occurs when large numbers of immature fluke migrate simultaneously through the liver, causing haemorrhage and sudden death — often with no prior warning signs. It typically occurs in autumn after a high-risk summer.
- Sudden deaths in otherwise healthy sheep are the classic presentation
- Post-mortem shows a swollen, haemorrhagic liver with visible fluke tracks
- Treat the whole flock immediately with triclabendazole if acute fluke is suspected
- Move sheep off high-risk pasture if possible
Reducing Fluke Risk Long-Term
- Fence off wet, rushy areas and water margins to reduce snail habitat access
- Improve drainage on high-risk fields where practical
- Avoid grazing high-risk fields in autumn with naive or high-value stock
- Quarantine treat all incoming animals before mixing with the home flock/herd
