How to Select the Correct Electric Fence Energiser

Choosing the right electric fence energiser is one of the most important decisions you'll make when setting up or upgrading your fencing system. Get it wrong and you'll face escaped livestock, damaged stock, or a system that simply doesn't work. Get it right, and you'll have a reliable, low-maintenance fence that does exactly what it should. Here's what to consider.

1. Know Your Fence Length
The single most important factor is the total length of fence you need to power. Energisers are rated by the maximum fence length they can handle — typically measured in miles or kilometres. A general rule of thumb:
- Up to 1 mile — a small mains or battery energiser will suffice
- 1–5 miles — a mid-range energiser is appropriate
- 5+ miles — you'll need a high-output energiser, often mains-powered
Always add a 20–30% buffer to your calculated fence length to account for vegetation, gate lines, and future extensions.

2. Mains, Battery, or Solar?
Mains-powered energisers deliver the most consistent output and are ideal for permanent fencing around fields, paddocks, and yards. They require a reliable power supply and are best suited to fixed installations.
Battery-powered energisers offer flexibility for remote locations or temporary fencing. They're ideal for rotational grazing systems or where mains power isn't available. Factor in battery replacement or recharge costs over time.
Solar-powered energisers combine the convenience of battery operation with a self-sustaining power source. They're excellent for remote or off-grid locations, though output can vary in low-light conditions.

3. Output Voltage and Joule Rating
The joule rating indicates the energy output per pulse — the higher the joules, the more effective the fence against determined animals. As a guide:
- Sheep and poultry — 0.5 joules or less is typically sufficient
- Cattle and pigs — 1–2 joules recommended
- Horses — 2–4 joules (horses are more sensitive, so use a lower voltage setting)
- Deer and large wildlife — 4+ joules may be needed
Voltage output should ideally reach 5,000–10,000 volts at the fence line for a deterrent effect. Note that voltage drops with distance and vegetation contact, so overspecifying slightly is wise.

4. Number of Lines
Most energisers power a single fence line. If you need to power multiple lines (e.g. a field fence and a yard fence independently), look for a multi-line energiser or consider separate units per line. Multi-line units offer greater control and flexibility.

5. Grounding
An energiser is only as good as its grounding system. Poor grounding is the most common cause of fence failure. Ensure your energiser has adequate grounding terminals and invest in quality grounding rods — typically 3–6 metres of copper-clad steel rod driven into moist soil. In dry or sandy conditions, you may need additional rods or a grounding mesh.

6. Safety Features
Look for energisers with:
- Fault indicators — alert you to short circuits or grounding issues
- Overload protection — prevents damage to the unit
- Tamper-resistant design — important for public-facing or shared boundaries
- CE/UKCA marking — ensures compliance with UK safety standards

7. Brand and Support
Choose a reputable brand with a proven track record in agricultural fencing. Check that spare parts are available and that the manufacturer or supplier offers technical support. A well-supported energiser will save you time and money over its lifetime.
