Why Electric Fencing Works

Electric fencing is one of the most cost-effective and flexible stock-control tools on the farm. When set up correctly, it works through psychological deterrence — animals learn quickly to respect the fence, meaning you need far less physical infrastructure than traditional stock fencing. But a poorly installed system is worse than no fence at all.

Choosing the Right Energiser

The energiser (or fencer unit) is the heart of the system. Key factors:

  • Output (Joules): More joules = more punch through vegetation and longer fence runs. As a rule of thumb, allow 1 joule per kilometre of fence for clean conditions; more for weedy or wet conditions.
  • Mains vs. battery vs. solar: Mains-powered units are most powerful and reliable where power is available. Battery units (9V or 12V) suit remote paddocks. Solar units work well in summer but may need a larger battery bank for winter reliability.
  • Livestock type: Cattle are easier to contain than sheep — sheep's wool insulates them, so you need a higher-output unit and closer wire spacing. Horses are highly sensitive and generally easy to contain.

Earthing: The Most Overlooked Step

A poor earth is the number one cause of electric fence failure. The circuit is only complete when current flows from the energiser, through the fence wire, through the animal, into the ground, and back to the energiser via the earth stake.

  • Use at least one earth stake per joule of energiser output (minimum 3 stakes for most farm units)
  • Stakes should be galvanised steel or copper, at least 1 metre long, driven fully into the ground
  • Space stakes at least 3 metres apart
  • In dry or sandy soils, earth near a water source or use a ground-return system
  • Connect all stakes with insulated cable back to the energiser earth terminal

Fence Layout and Wire Spacing

Wire height and spacing depends on the livestock you are containing:

  • Cattle: 2-3 wires at approximately 30cm, 60cm, and 90cm. A single wire at nose height (around 75-90cm) can work for well-trained cattle.
  • Sheep: 3-5 wires starting at 15-20cm from the ground, spaced 15-20cm apart. Sheep will probe low and push under if given the chance.
  • Horses: 2-3 wires or a single wide tape/braid at chest height (around 90-110cm). Avoid thin wire alone — horses can run through it without seeing it.
  • Pigs: 2 wires at 15cm and 30cm — pigs root under, so the bottom wire must be low.

Training Livestock to Respect the Fence

New animals need to learn the fence before being left unsupervised:

  • Introduce cattle and horses in a small paddock with a solid fence behind the electric wire
  • Allow them to investigate and receive a safe shock in a controlled setting
  • Never introduce stressed, hungry, or newly weaned animals directly to an electric fence boundary
  • Sheep can be trained using a small pen with bait (feed) inside the electric fence

Safety Rules

  • Always use a fence tester/voltmeter to check output — never test with your hand
  • Fit warning signs on gates and fence lines, especially near public footpaths
  • Never connect an electric fence to mains power directly — always use a purpose-built energiser
  • Keep fence clear of vegetation — grass and weeds touching the wire drain power and can cause fires in dry conditions
  • Switch off the energiser before working on the fence
  • Keep energisers away from flammable materials and out of reach of children

Common Faults and How to Fix Them

  • Low voltage reading: Check for vegetation contact, broken insulators, or a poor earth connection first.
  • No output: Check the fuse, power supply, and that the lead-out cable is connected correctly.
  • Intermittent fault: Walk the fence line with a tester to find the point where voltage drops — usually a broken wire, staple shorting to a post, or a damaged insulator.
  • Animals breaking through: Voltage is likely too low, or the fence layout is not appropriate for the species. Check earth and energiser output.
